Jesus came to give us a perfect revelation of what God is like and a perfect fulfillment of the Ten Commandments as our Surety and Substitute. A Special Time (Gen. 2:1-3; Ex. 16:15-18; 20:8-11; 31:12-18; Isa. 66:23; Jer. 17:24-25;  &Eze. 20:12; Matt. 24:20; Mark 2:27-28; Heb. 4:1-11; 10:5-10; Rev. 14:6-7)

1. When God created this earth what special time did he set apart for holy use? The seventh day of the week.

2. What does Holy Scripture call the seventh day of the week? “Sabbath.”

3. For whom did Jesus say the Sabbath was made? For human beings.

4. If the Sabbath was made for us of what is it to remind us? That God is our Creator who has provided us with a wonderful environment, with life, with food, & with pleasure in enjoying his gifts.

5. According to Hebrews 4 of what other work of God is the weekly Sabbath a reminder? Of his finished work for our salvation in Christ, of the temporal rest that believers have in Christ’s fulfillment of the will of God in their behalf, & of that eternal rest that the saved will experience in the kingdom of God.

6. How important for his people does God regard the Sabbath? So important that he calls it the sign, engraved in stone (& in the heart), of his everlasting covenant with them from which flows every blessing.

7. What evidence besides Genesis 2 and Mark 2 does the Bible give that the seventh-day Sabbath was a divine command for his people since creation? The fact that when he gave manna to his people before they came to Mount Sinai, he reminded them that it was his holy rest day that he had previously commanded – even the reason he had delivered them from Egypt so that they could worship him aright.

8. Where else besides Hebrews 4 and Exodus 31 does the Bible demonstrate that the special nature of the Sabbath is to continue into earth’s final events and beyond into eternity? In Matthew 24, in the first angel’s message of Revelation 14, & in Isaiah 66:23.

            A Special Activity (Ex. 16:14-29; 31:12-18; Lev. 23:3; Isa. 58:13-14; Matt. 12:10-13; Luke 13:10-17; Acts 18:4)

10. According to Leviticus 23 for what special purpose did God set the Sabbath apart? For a time of holy meeting with him.

11. What activities does Isaiah give for Sabbath observance? Those of honoring God & finding delight in him so that God can uplift our spirits & feed us with the promises of his everlasting covenant.

12. When God instituted the giving of manna in the wilderness what lessons was he trying to teach them? That he was the source of their provisions for this life & for the next & that the Sabbath hours were not to be spent in secular pursuits.

13. What should we learn from the fact that Jesus did so many healing miracles on the Sabbath day? That God comes especially near to heal on the Sabbath.

14. What should we learn from the fact that Jesus and the Apostles did much of their teaching and preaching on the Sabbath day? That God comes especially near to instruct his people on the Sabbath.

15. How might we refer to the seventh day Sabbath if it was made for special communion with the Deity that God’s people might be instructed, uplifted, & healed? As the Divine Classroom.

16. If the Bible teaches that God set the seventh day apart for a special, holy use and that while remembering him as our Creator and Redeemer its purpose is for the education and healing of those who meet together with him on that day, who would most likely work to obscure or substitute that truth? The devil himself.

            A Special Relationship (Ex. 31. 12-17; Isa. 56:1-7; 2 Cor. 11:2; Rev. 13:4-15)

17. If the Sabbath is the sign of God’s everlasting covenant with his people, what type of relationship does this portray? That of a permanent & intimate marriage.

18. When one party to a marriage covenant rejects the sign of their union, what results? The covenant is broken & the innocent party has every right to permanently terminate the union.

19. To what seemingly unimportant people does Isaiah give full rights among God’s people when they become Sabbath keepers? The eunuchs & the strangers.

19. If the Sabbath is the enduring sign of God’s everlasting covenant and a designated, special time to worship him, what will be the center of controversy in earth’s final worship crisis? It will be over the Sabbath for in the fourth Commandment God outlines his right to rule, his territory, & the sign of his authority.

20. What gift of God is of special importance in order to prepare his people for the final crisis over worship as portrayed in Revelation 13? The gift of the Sabbath as a special time to strengthen one’s faith while worshipping God & learning his will.

In Jesus God gave us a perfect revelation of himself and a perfect fulfillment of the Ten Commandments. All true education will enhance our worship of God and prepare us for eternal life with him.

            The Church as Light (Psa. 43:3; Prov. 12:17; 23:23; Dan. 8:12; Zech. 8:6; Matt. 5:14-16; 28:19-20; John 10:7-16; Acts 2:41-47; 1 Cor. 4:17; Eph. 2:20; 4:15; 1 Tim. 3:15)

1. Of what is light as symbol? Light is a symbol of truth.

2. Does truth matter? If truth does not matter then nothing matters for only by knowing what is true can we direct our steps in this life and know the way to eternal life – otherwise all is confusion & no signpost can be trusted.

3. Since expressing truth always brings disagreement from someone, should we therefore not express the truth? No, for truth is more precious than gold & is the way to salvation & sanctification & God commands us to tell it to our neighbors whereas the “man of sin” tries to eliminate it.

4. How does Paul tell us to speak the truth? In Ephesians 4 he says we are to “speak the truth in love,” meaning that we should not disrespect or devalue those who disagree with us but rather do all in our power to help them, as Jesus always did.

5. How did Jesus express the church’s duty to share the truth? In Matthew 5 he said we should let our light shine so all can see it & in Matthew 28 he said we should teach all nations the things he taught us.

7. On what is the church founded? On the apostles & prophets who testify of Jesus the church’s cornerstone.

            The Church as Life (Matt. 13:24-30; Luke 4:18-21; John 10:11-18; Eph. 5:25-27; 1 Cor. 12:4-14; 1 Tim. 3:15)

8. As the bride of Christ what should the church be teaching its members? How to be perfecting their characters so as to become the pure bride of Christ.

9. As the body of Christ what should the church be teaching its members? How to employ their gifts for the harmonious function & education of the body.

10. As the fold of Christ what should the church be teaching its members? How to bring & welcome new members & how to detect & chase away wolves that come in sheep’s clothing.

11. When Jesus likened the church to a field planted with good seed of what did he warn? Not to try to eradicate the tares that the enemy had sown for that might cause some true believers to be rooted up.

12. When Paul likened the church to a family what should that teach us? That we should have love one for another, sweet fellowship, & unity.

13. When Jesus addressed the church in Nazareth what activities that we should also do did he come to fulfill? Preach the Gospel to the poor, heal the brokenhearted, preach deliverance to the captives & recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, & to preach the acceptable year of the Lord.

The Church as Love (Matt. 18:15-17; Luke 10:30-37; Acts 2:41-47; 5:40; 2 Cor. 11:23-28; 1 Thes. 2:3-9; 1 Pet. 5:1-3)

14. How did Paul express the truth in love to the church in Thessalonica? In purity according to God’s will, not man’s, not using flattery nor for personal gain or praise, but gentle as a nursing mother while working night & day yet taking no offerings.

15. What story did Jesus tell to illustrate how love behaves toward others? That of the good Samaritan.

16. How did the early church demonstrate love one for another? They ate & prayed together; they shared with those in need; & they worshipped & praised God together.

17. What did Christ’s disciples endure in order to tell others about the Gospel? They endured hardships, beatings, imprisonment, & death rather than cease to tell the story of Jesus.

18. How can the church be a safe place where one can raise questions and express doubts? Only by maintaining open communication between leaders & members in a spirit of mutual love & respect rather than by trying to maintain a forced unity where open communication is stifled.

Why did Jesus say that it was necessary to keep the commandments in order to enter into life?

(Gen. 1:26-29; Matt. 10:22; John 14:9, 26; 17:3; Rom. 1:20; 1 Cor. 2:6-10; 2 Tim. 3:15-17) Blog 15-21 Nov. 2020

REVIEW: Adam and Eve learned through manual employment, governing responsibilities, marital compatibility, and divine instruction. In Eden, in the home, in the classroom, in the workplace, and in nature those who come with a desire to learn and put what they learn into practice will grow in the wisdom that comes from above. The Ten Commandments teach us about God and about how we should live for his glory. Together with the story of Genesis we are able to form a correct worldview about origins, meaning, morality, and destiny of life. In sending us his Son God gave us a perfect revelation of himself and an embodiment of the Ten Commandments. All true education will enhance our worship of God our Maker.

Learning for eternity (Gen. 1:26-27; Isa. 40:31; Jer. 30:17; John 14:9, 26; 17:3; Rom. 1:20; 2 Tim. 3:15-17; Heb. 1:2)

1. Who did God create human beings like? God created human beings like the Godhead itself: physically, mentally, and morally with power to think & to do, to love & to communicate.

2. When Adam and Eve sinned what happened to their likeness to God? It was severely marred & almost obliterated.

3. What does God promise to do for fallen humanity? To restore what they lost in the fall.

4. In what way does God restore what humanity lost in the fall? He does it progressively through the process of sanctification throughout one’s lifetime. Then glorification prepares us to advance into eternity.

5. What knowledge did Jesus say would lead to eternal life? The knowledge of God.

6. In Romans 1 where does Paul say we can learn about God? In his created works that surround us.

7. What other sources of divine instruction are available to us? God speaks to us in providence, in words from another person, in words from the Holy Spirit, & in the Bible.

8. According to Hebrews 1 and John 14 what two persons of the Godhead are especially instrumental in teaching and restoring us to the image of God? Jesus & the Holy Spirit.

9. In writing to Timothy where does Paul say we can find an all-sufficient and necessary guide to prepare us for this life and eternal salvation? In the Word of God which should occupy the highest place in our education.

            Redemption and Education (Proverbs 1:7; 9:10; Matt. 10:22; 19:17; John 6:47; Rom. 10:17; 2 Tim. 3:15 )

10. If growing in holy living is an object of education what place does redemption occupy? We must distinguish redemption from holy living (sanctification) for our growth in grace is not what redeems us – that Christ did 2000 years ago & this redemption is ours when we believe the Gospel.

11. How then can we be brought to faith in Jesus if that is the only way to inherit eternal life? Romans 10 tells us that faith comes by hearing the Word of God & 2 Timothy 3 says that the Holy Scriptures are able to make us wise unto salvation.

12. If faith in Jesus is the only condition for receiving eternal life then why did Jesus say in Matthew 19 that it was necessary to keep the commandments in order to enter into life? Because perfect obedience to God’s Law is the basis (not the means) for acceptance into God’s family & since none of us have this requirement we must believe in Jesus who lived & died as our Substitute for in him we have the perfect obedience the Law requires.

13. If by faith we present to God the righteousness of his Son as the basis for receiving eternal life, do we need anything more than initial faith to guarantee our eternal life? Yes, we must keep on trusting in the righteousness of Jesus, for he who endures unto the end shall be saved.

14. How does Solomon express our need to believe in Jesus before we can begin working with the Holy Spirit in our sanctification? He says: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge (& wisdom).”

            The classroom for Eternal Life (Psa. 19:1-6; Isa. 24:5; Rom. 1:20; 6:4, 12-14; 8:22; Eph. 5:1 – 6:9; 1 Pet. 2:19 – 3:12)

15. What relation does our progress in sanctification have to do with our continued acceptance as part of God’s family? In sanctification we have an active part to play which is a constant reminder of how great Christ’s victory is for us & since our sinful nature still remains until glorification it is a continual reminder of how unworthy we are of God’s grace thus leading us to trust more & more in what Jesus, out of utter love, accomplished for us.

16. What aspects of human existence do both Paul and Peter point out as being instructive classrooms that prepare us for lovinly living with God for eternity? Marriage, parenting, employment under a boss, internal church relationships, & even our relationship to the society around us.

17. How does nature work as a classroom for eternity? Although deformed by sin it still shows us the eternal power & love of the Godhead as well as picturing the effects of sin.

18. If your desire is to live with God for eternity what type of education will you most desire now? The education that tells what God is like & that ensures your final salvation & preparation for living with the Godhead for eternity.
