INTRODUCTION: Christian education is the subject for our consideration during the last quarter of 2020. Every other education pales into insignificance if we do not receive Christian education for God, Christ, and the Holy Spirit have made and redeemed us and only they know how to direct our paths.
Before the Fall (Gen. 1:26-31; 2:1-23; Job 36:22; Psa. 19:1-6; Isa. 43:7; Rom. 1:20)
1. Why did God create human beings? For his glory, for companionship, & for ruling this earth.
2. How does God state the nature that he intended mankind to have? They were made in God’s likeness which involves companionship, working together, governing the lower creatures, & enjoying God’s provisions.
3. Of what was the mist rising from within the earth a type? The mist that arose from within the earth and watered the plants is a type of the indwelling Holy Spirit that in the uncursed soil of the human heart produced fruit for God’s glory.
4. How were the lessons of the Ten Commandments summarized in Eden? The first four commandments are encapsulated in the sanctifying of the creation Sabbath & the last six are encapsulated in the marriage covenant pronounced by God.
5. What two essential components make up mankind as God created them? Formed dirt & the breath of God which together make a living soul.
6. Why did God place Adam and Eve in a garden? Because in the tranquility & natural beauty of a garden a person can best learn of the love & majesty of God.
7. How were Eden’s rivers different than ours today? As they flowed downstream they branched out to water the earth rather than gobbling up smaller streams & forming a single current as our rivers do today. This is a picture of how marital love was intended to flow.
8. After the Sabbath, what was the first form of education that God gave to Adam and Eve? Work.
9. What covenant did God make with Adam? That he could freely eat of every tree but one & have life everlasting = “Obey & live.” A covenant of works.
10. In Genesis 2 how did Adam demonstrate his ability to learn and exercise his knowledge? By naming all the animals in accord with their nature & habits.
11. What educational implication is inherent in the fact that husband and wife were to “cleave together” and become “one flesh.” That they would be teaching each other as they lived together.
12. What did the forbidden tree in Eden represent? An education in evil.
After the Fall (Gen. 3:1-24; 1 Tim. 2:14; 2 Peter 2:1-17)
13. What method did Lucifer use to introduce sin into this world? He used direct confrontation with the mind of Eve suggesting under the guise of a wise serpent that what God had taught the holy pair was restricting their freedom, that their education had been false, & that he offered them a superior knowledge.
14. What does Eve’s response to Lucifer tell us? That God had been diligently teaching the holy Pair in how to live an enjoyable life.
15. How do we know that God had not restricted Adam and Eve’s freedom? By the fact that they were free to eat of the forbidden tree if they chose to even though God had taught them what the results would be.
16. What did Eve see in Lucifer’s offer? That the tree of the knowledge of good and evil was good for food, nice appearing, & of great value for securing wisdom.
17. What was the first knowledge that Adam and Eve received as a result of eating the forbidden fruit? That they were naked apart from God.
18. What was the difference between Adam’s eating the forbidden fruit and Eve’s? Eve was deceived by the serpent but Adam knowingly as our federal head & representative ate the fruit.
