REVIEW: In the Psalms God is seen to be a righteous and merciful Judge who brings deliverance to his people and destroys their enemies. He instructs his people how to live in harmony with his law and gives them power to do so. He hears the prayers of those who love him and answers their pleas.

Jesus Before the Cross

1. Of whom did Jesus say that the Old Testament spoke? Jesus said that the Old Testament Scriptures spoke of himself & that what was written in Moses, the prophets, & the Psalms must be fulfilled (Luke 24:25-26, 44; John 5:39).

2. What description of Jesus given in the Psalms did Jesus expound on in John 10? Jesus refers to himself as the Good Shepherd who guides & gives his life for his sheep (Psa. 23:1-6; 78:52; John 10:11-15).

3. From what Psalm does Hebrews 2 quote when it says, “I will declare thy name unto my brethren, in the midst of the church will I sing praise unto thee”? Paul, in Hebrews 2 quotes from Psalm 22 (Psa. 22:22; Heb. 2:12).

4. How did Jesus’ life demonstrate the truth of Psalm 22:22? It was customary for Jesus to teach in the synagogues on the Sabbath day (Mark 6:2; Luke 4:15-19).

5. Where in Psalms are presented Jesus’ words, “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?” Jesus’ words “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?” are found in Psalm 22 (Psa. 22:1; Matt. 27:46).

6. In Psalms 22 what other events of Jesus’ crucifixion are presented? Psalm 22 includes the scorn of bystanders, the effect of Christ’s broken heart, the piercing of his hands & feet, his nakedness, & the parting of his garments (Psa. 22:7, 14-18; Matt. 27:41; John 19:23-24, 34; 20:25).

11. What should all these fulfillments of what is written in the Psalms tell us? All these fulfillments should teach us the divine inspiration of God’s Word, especially as prophesied in the Old Testament, so that we trust it in its entirety (2 Pet. 1:19-21).

12. When God raised up Jesus from the dead what declaration did he make? At Jesus’ resurrection, God said of Jesus: “Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee.” (Psa. 2:7; Acts 13:33; Heb. 1:5).

13. Upon Christ’s ascension what did the Father do for the Son? The Father raised the Son to his right hand, anointed him king, & set him on his throne (Psa. 2:1-6; 45:6-7; Heb. 1:8-9, 13).

14. What covenant promise made by God was fulfilled when Jesus took his seat at God’s right hand? God’s covenant promise to David was fulfilled when Jesus, the Son of David, was seated at God’s right hand in heaven (2 Sam. 7:11-16; Psa. 89:27-37; 132:11; Acts 2:30-36).

15. What qualified Jesus to be a judge and king? His righteous life on earth qualified Jesus to be Judge & King (Psa. 45:6-7; 72:1-2; 89:14; John 5:22, 27; Heb. 1:8-9).

16. How long will Jesus be king? Scripture says that Jesus’ throne is eternal (Psa. 45:6; 89:4; 145:13; Heb. 1:8).

17. What other office did the Father give Jesus when he ascended to heaven? Jesus was made High Priest & Intercessor upon his ascension to heaven (Psa. 110:4; Heb. 2:17; 5:6-10; 7:17-22).

18. What is unique about the position given to Jesus when he ascended to heaven? Jesus was made High Priest & King like Melchizedek, a combination of offices never allowed under the Aaronic priesthood (2 Chron. 26:18; Psa. 2:6; 110:4; Heb. 7:1, 21).

19. How does Jesus dual role of priest and king have special benefit to us? Since Jesus is both Intercessor (Advocate) & Judge for those who believe in him, we are assured of finding mercy in God’s final judgment (Psa. 72:1-4; John 5:22; Heb. 2:17; 7:24-26; Jam. 2:13; 1 John 2:1-2).
